Health and Safety
Derbyshire NUT is active in
the following areas:
-
Supporting school H&S
Representatives by answering telephone queries, visiting
schools with problems and helping them with their first
inspection.
-
Local training of H&S
Reps: a one-day event is organised every year which Reps are
entitled to attend.
-
Our Roving H&S
Representative, Tim Wherly, acts as representative for
schools without their own representative. He has a
programme of school inspections for these schools, visiting
them once a year.
-
The LEA Health & Safety
Committee is our means of raising concerns and discussing
procedures with the LEA. The Committee meets once per
term. The NUT has an active role on this committee,
providing the secretariat for the union side. Topics for
discussion included: restraint; voice care; asbestos;
appropriate chairs for use by infant teachers; and lone
working.
-
Bringing issues to the
attention of members by reporting to the Division Council
meetings, by articles in DATA and by circulars to schools.
-
David Furness is on the
Union’s National Working Party for H&S.
