Academies Bill
Protect Your School
One of the
first actions of the
new government was to pass The Academies Bill.
It says your school can
become an academy in as little as 3 months. This could lead to
radical changes in your terms and conditions without a radical
improvement in funding or any evidence that there will be an
improvement in the education we provide for the young people
in our care.
The NUT stands for a good
local school for every child and it is difficult to see how
the academy program can achieve this goal.
Where Academies have been
proposed the NUT has campaigned against their establishment
whilst working hard to best support our members working in
them.
Christine Blower, our General
Secretary said:
“Current proposals will
undermine properly accountable local authority education
provision. We need a good local school for every child, working
within the local family of schools. The NUT will seek to work
with other teachers’organisations to attain this goal.”

Conference Report
The annual conference took
place at Easter in Liverpool. Here are some of the
issues discussed.
Concerns
About the Far Right
Support for the far right
cannot be compatible with the teaching profession. How can we
do our best by our students if we actively discriminate
against some of them? We must work against the politics of
hate
OFSTED
Tales of poor treatment by
inspectors are rife. The stress this can cause not to mention
the more direct effects this can have on a teacher’s career is
one of the main concerns of your union and we will fight poor
decisions by OFSTED as well as working towards its reform
Involvement
of Young Teachers.
Without the next generation
of union activists, our union will not survive. Discussions
of how we deal with Young Teachers and ensure continuity of
support were an important part of the conference discussions.
The Outcome
of the Election.
Whoever forms the next
government, we can expect attacks on education. We can expect
the further privatisation of education, erosion of our terms
and conditions, stricter OFSTED, reduction of our pay in real
terms Amongst this uncertainty one thing is certain. You can
expect the support of your union.
If any of these issues
effect you, please don't hesitate to contact us on the above
number.
