Redundancies

The authority has issued a series of 188 notices to Derbyshire.

A section 188 notice notifies the staff at a school that it is the intention of authority to identify staff for redundancy.  The notice identifies the number of redundancies and may identify which areas the redundancies may come from, but does not identify individuals.

Redundancy is currently facing staff in fourteen schools.  After the notices are issued, a series of negotiations are held to determine the procedure by which the redundancies will be made.  This is the first stage in the redundancy procedure.

It is essential that the union is involved at this stage.  Schools are expected to notify the union if 188 notices are issued, but this does not always happen.

If there are redundancies in your school, you must notify the union as soon as possible.

Conference Report.

This years Conference  was held in Harrogate with Baljeet Ghale, the union's first black President, in the chair.

Discussions also took place to re-affirm the union’s stance on the following issues.

  • Lesson Observation and Monitoring
  • Young Teachers' Pay
  • Building Schools for the Future
  • Climate Change
  • Pupil Behaviour
  • Childhood and Excessive Testing
  • Health and Safety
  • Teachers' Mental Illness
  • Work/Life Balance
  • Primary Curriculum and Early Years
  • Treatment of Black Pupils

The major decisions were:

We will be voting for strike action on pay.
Along with other Public Sector unions, we will be balloting our members with a view to taking strike action on pay.

We have established a political fund.
For the last few years there has been a debate on The Political Fund.  This means we can back other political organisations.

We will be taking the government to court.
For several years now, we have not been a member of the RIG group.  This has meant we have been excluded from talks on pay and working conditions.  We will be taking the government.

Happy Retirement

Malcolm Anderson, the Regional Secretary, has retired.

Before becoming a full time union officer, Malcolm has always had close links with Derbyshire.

Malcolm was always very well informed and his calm and considered approach to negotiation was often successful where more confrontational methods had failed.

Malcolm will be remembered for his unique filing system which apparently consisted of letting piles of files build up on his desk, covering them with a sheet and then moving office.

Local Rep Stars in Teacher

Debbie Turner, one of our roving Learning Reps was featured in The Teacher Magazine.

In the article, which is part of the series “My Role in the Union”, Debbie outlines the roles and responsibilities of a learning rep as well as passing on advice to members thinking of becoming Learning Reps.  She says she is most proud the number of people she has manage to place in training, in particular the take up on the ICT courses.

Debbie won the Midlands Region TUC Learning award in 2004.
